There are many discussions that take place over motorcycle insurance, with points being made on various aspects of this form of vehicle insurance. Whether it is liked or not, there are three main points for and against motorcycle insurance.
Abiding by the law. The main point of having a motorcycle insurance policy is, apart from ensuring you are covered, is to abide by the laws set by the countrys government. In the United Kingdom, it is a legal requirement to have a full motorcycle insurance policy in place before any motorcycle is taken out on a public road. If this law is not abided by, there are several implications and repercussions, from a fine and penalty points, through to the reclaiming of the drivers license and in the worst case scenario, a jail sentence.
Peace of mind. It is extremely comforting to know that if a motorcycle insurance policy is in place, particularly a Fully Comprehensive policy, that all costs will be covered in the event of an accident. Whilst an accident can be an extremely traumatising time and can take months to recover from, having an insurance policy in place provides peace of mind and will help, even if only in monetary form, with the recovery from the accident.
Cheaper insurance. If a motorcycle insurance policy is taken out and not claimed on, the following years insurance policies are going to be considerably cheaper. The reason behind this is for each year that a policy is not claimed on, the insurance company will take this as a positive point and award the policy holder with a No Claims Bonus. In general, the more No Claims Bonuses that are accrued, the lower an insurance premium will be.
Expensive. Unfortunately, one of the main negative points of motorcycle insurance is the fact that it can be so expensive. Depending on the riders age, experience and their motorbike, it is not uncommon for an insurance policy to run into thousands of pounds. Whilst these prices are not common place, policies can be extremely expensive, especially for the younger riders.
Pointless. Although it is a legal requirement, motorcycle insurance can seem pointless to some. The main reason behind this is the policy is there to protect the rider in the event of an accident or relevant incident. Therefore, if no accidents or incidents happen throughout the year, the money paid to the insurer can seem pointless as it has been of no use. Whilst this may be an occurring thought for some, it has to be remembered that the insurance is a legal requirement and if it was not taken out, it could end up costing the rider a lot more than the potential cost of the premium.
Confusing. With so many different variables and affecting factors, motorcycle insurance can be extremely confusing. From the specific details of the motorcycle, through to the security features that are in place to protect against theft, it can be a very complicated process even taking out an insurance policy.
