Hybrid cars are becoming increasingly popular for ‘green’ motorists. The trend is thought to continued to rise as prices at the fuel pumps have shot up once again. Motorbike riders will also be able to make ‘greener’ options as Yamaha and Toyota combine their designs skills to build the first hybrid bike together.

The Isle of Man TT saw hybrid motorbikes for the first time with riders giving the machines the thumbs up for both style and performance. Although they did comment that the machines needed to be continually developed to reduce the weight of the batteries.

Those in the know have said that the Yamaha, Toyota combination machine will be powered by both an electric motor and a 20bhp internal combustion engine. The system will be controlled by a ECU, along with a water cooled 250cc engine capable of sending power to the back wheel or the electric generator to keep the battery topped up.

Whilst manufacturing of hybrid motorbikes has come along way in recent years there appears to be many more studies and researches which need to be carried out to make this bikes financially viable alternatives for riders which still pack the power of a modern 250cc bike. It is also hoped that along with insurance companies going ‘green’ by offering reduced policies for hybrid car owners, the same reductions will also be offered to hybrid motorbike owners. However, as the machines have not been launched yet it is an unknown as to both sales and what insurers will offer.

Whilst motorbike riders await hybrids there are a number of proactive approaches which can be taken to help reduce the cost of their insurance premiums. Whilst there is little you can do about which part of the country you live, apart from moving, keeping your motorbike in a securely locked garage, along with anchor points can reduce your premiums.

The same precautions and advice to compare policies to get the best value for money is as equally important to bikers as it is for car drivers.
