As with a lot of necessities in life, a large amount of people who purchase motorcycle insurance do not shop around to find the best deal possible and simply purchase the first insurance premium that they come across. Although this may be the quickest and easiest way to purchase motorcycle insurance, it is by far the most expensive.
For many, the only type of insurance that they will consider is Fully Comprehensive. Generally the most expensive level of cover initially, Fully Comprehensive insurance provides cover in the majority of incidents that the policy holder may encounter. For example, whether it is something minor in which their motorcycle has become slightly damaged, or a large-scale accident in which expenses are required for medical and legal costs, as well as for a replacement motorcycle, Fully Comprehensive insurance will ensure that all of this is taken care of.
However, it must be remembered that there are two other forms of insurance, Third Party and Third Party, Fire and Theft, that, whilst offering reduced cover, may be more than suitable for an array of different people and their individual circumstances.
A prime example for the need for Third Party insurance is for someone who travels only a handful of miles to work, on a motorcycle that is worth only a few hundred pounds. The reason behind this is that Third Party insurance only provides cover to any parties in which the policy holder is involved in an accident with. However, should the policy holder only ride a few miles to work and back, then the likelihood of an accident is greatly reduced and the fact that their motorcycle is only worth a minimal amount relative, as if a Fully Comprehensive policy was taken out and the excess was two hundred pounds, it would very rarely be worth the money additional money.
Third Party, Fire and Theft is not a massively popular option, primarily because people either choose Third Party or Fully Comprehensive, as these suit their needs perfectly. However, it is occasionally advised to take the additional cover of fire and theft, particularly if the scenario above is the same, but the motorcycle is left in an open or unsecured area, or one that has a high crime rate, whilst at work. If this was the case and the motorcycle was stolen or set alight, Third Party insurance would not provide any assistance, but Third Party, Fire and Theft would offer money to cover the repairs or the market value of the motorcycle if irrepairable.
Choosing the right level of motorcycle insurance cover can be a difficult process. Whilst there are only three options available, each has its positives and negatives and they are all suited to a range of different individuals and scenarios. Above all, the most important point to remember is to take your time and do not to rush into anything. By sitting back and deciding what option it is you actually need, you will be able to ensure that you do not spend money on any unnecessary insurance cover.
