Unlike with car insurance, there is no legal obligation for you to buy caravan insurance for your caravan but, with the cost of a caravan itself generally averaging much higher than a car, it pays to take precautions and buy insurance.

Of course, if you are going to tow your touring caravan on any public roads, then you are legally obliged to have at least third party liability insurance.

A static caravan is, by definition, static and so it is up to you whether or not you insure it, but really it would be a false economy not to. Static caravans can’t be locked away from the elements like touring caravans can, and this puts them at the mercy of all kind of threats, from fire, vandalism, flood, theft, storm and accidental damage.

When buying touring caravan insurance, a tracking device can lower premiums as they are good deterrents to thieves.

Traditional security devices like locks and alarms can be easy to get around if a thief is wise to the ways of bypassing them, and can often be disabled in seconds.

Trackers however can offer a real deterrent, as well as being very helpful in the successful recovery of a stolen caravan. Caravan insurance can be reduced by as much as 30 per cent when a tracker is fitted.

Most types of tracking devices available for caravans use global satellite positioning to pinpoint the exact location of a stolen caravan. These make only a minimal drain on the battery, and will inform the police if your caravan is taken with its exact location. This type of tracker is controlled by a key fob, which means it has extra benefits. For example, you can send a distress signal from your caravan in emergencies.

Touring caravans that are taken out onto the road are open to many more dangers than those which are left static, and so there are many more options to consider for insuring them. For example, if you were towing the caravan and you broke down, or the caravan was damaged, your insurance company could collect and repair it and return it for you. Is it worth not paying premiums only to be left with the inconvenience of doing this should the worst happen? Probably not.

Caravan insurance can also prevent your holiday being ruined by a damaged caravan. Many premiums offer the option of having a replacement caravan to continue your holiday in or, failing this, accommodation costs so that you can stay in the area you are holidaying in at least.
