BEWARE! Insurance companies are using unscrupulous practices to get policyholders off its rolls!
While I understand that these companies need to make a buck to keep afloat, there must be some better way to make more money than to void a policy for just 2 cents!
Take Stan Rosen of Miramar, Miami. He lost his job, his wife was six months’ pregnant and he faced an operation and he had COBRA benefits to help make ends meet.
Then, by mistake he underpaid his November bill by two cents (!!), and his benefits administrator said his policy was being canceled. Rosen and his wife, saw “making ends meet” slip through their fingers.

Illinois Medicare programs are publicly funded and administered by the United States government. These programs provide health insurance coverage to Americans 65 years of age and older. There are several eligibility requirements besides age that must be met for individuals to receive benefits. For people who are generally healthy, the guidelines require that they have been United States citizens or be permanent legal residents for at least five continuous years. Either they or their spouse must have paid Medicare taxes for a minimum of ten years to qualify. There are certain serious medical conditions that allow for early coverage as well.

Many recipients of Illinois Medicare have opted to receive their benefits though private health insurance companies rather than working through the original Medicare plan. These plans are also known as Part C. They are not considered supplemental plans, but entire plans that replace Medicare Part A and Part B. These plans vary in cost and coverage the same way regular health care plans do. Out of pocket expenses also vary from one plan to another. To enroll, you must already have Medicare Part A and B. Though there are some caveats, most people can join a Medicare Advantage Plan even if they have pre-existing conditions.

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a viable alternative to traditional Illinois health insurance. When this insurance option was established, it was to replace the existing Medical Savings Account system. HSA’s enable you to pay current and future qualified medical expenses from a tax-free savings account. You must be covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) to qualify and it must be your only coverage. Those who are enrolled in Medicare or beneficiaries on someone else’s plan are not eligible. Unlike an HRA, which is controlled by the employer, you control the funds. These plans appeal to individuals who want to be in control of their health care decisions.
